River Ayr Way

River Ayr Way is a Scotland source-to-sea long-distance walk following the River Ayr from Glenbuck Loch to the Ayrshire coast at Ayr, where it links with the Ayrshire Coastal Path. It’s a linear route traditionally worked westward from the river’s source to the sea, and it’s designated as one of Scotland’s Great Trails. The full distance is about 44 miles (66 km), with an overall ascent and descent totaling roughly 470 m (1,540 ft).

The route is described as easy-going for a long-distance path, with mostly gentle walking but some rougher, muddier sections. It’s commonly planned as a short-break, with the trail split into three main stages to suit a long weekend itinerary.

Stage 1 is Glenbuck to Sorn (about 28.5 km). This leg starts in open moorland around Glenbuck Loch and follows the river downstream through landscape shaped by Ayrshire’s industrial past before transitioning into riverside woodland.

Stage 2 runs from Sorn to Stair (about 19.25 km). This stretch winds through villages including Sorn and Stair and continues along the River Ayr corridor.

Stage 3 continues from Stair to Ayr (about 19.5 km). The final section follows the river through open farmland and estates into Ayr, finishing at Ayr Harbour—useful for linking the walk onward along the Ayrshire Coastal Path.

Along the route, key landmarks highlighted include Ballochmyle Railway Viaduct and Catrine Voes Nature Reserve (with historic reservoirs for Catrine’s cotton mill). The path corridor also supports wildlife such as otters, badgers, and hen harriers, with regular birdlife in river, woodland, and moorland habitats.

Logistics matter: there aren’t dedicated support services for the whole walk, so plan your own transport, baggage, and accommodation. Accommodation and food options are limited at the start (Glenbuck has no facilities), but there are places to stay and eat at intermediate settlements such as Muirkirk, Sorn, Stair, Annbank, and in Ayr; public transport is available in some places along the way, but not consistently at all stages.

Route planning note: landslips have led to a diversion around Wellbank Flat in the Stair area (with temporary rerouting via Daldorch mentioned for challenge use). If you’re walking in that section, verify the current alignment before you commit to the lower Wellbank Flat stretch.
