Rogue River Trail #1160
Rogue River Trail #1160 is a long-distance, hiker-only backpacking route in southwestern Oregon that follows the Rogue River between Grave Creek and Foster Bar. Plan on a roughly 40-mile, 4–5 day trip in the Wild Rogue Wilderness corridor, using established camps along the river and side creeks.
The route generally trends downstream and stays tied to the river corridor, with repeated undulations rather than one steady grade. Expect steep, rugged canyon terrain where side creeks enter the Rogue—many sections feel remote, with limited easy detours if conditions change.
Water is generally available from side creeks. Many hikers plan on filtering rather than relying on direct river sources, and camping options vary between spots right at the river and sites set back near tributaries.
There are multiple named trail sections and landmarks commonly used as pace markers—such as Rainie Falls, Whiskey Creek, Bunker Creek, Kelsey Creek, Rogue River Ranch, Paradise Lodge, Tate Creek, and Big Bend/Illahe Lodge area—reflecting how the trail threads past river features and historic sites.
Seasonally, late spring and early fall are common choices for comfortable temperatures, with summer heat often pushing high. Winter plans require extra caution due to the remote, river-adjacent character of the route and the likelihood of seasonal hazards.
A fire-damage emergency closure affects Rogue River National Recreation Trail #1160 on the Lower Rogue River (Foster Bar Trailhead area) for the period May 4, 2026 through December 31, 2026. The closure order restricts travel for a segment beginning at the western terminus trailhead and running east about 3.5 miles to Flora Dell Creek, and an additional update notes unsafe conditions including burned/damaged bridges, unstable ground, loose boulders, falling trees, and mudslides/fallen trees making parts impassable. Avoid prohibited areas and only hike reopened sections if they are explicitly cleared.
