Romsdalseggen
Romsdalseggen is a famous ridge traverse hiking route in the Åndalsnes area. Expect a steep, rugged day on exposed terrain, with sections that require scrambling and handholds in the form of built-in chains.
The full route is roughly 10–11 km from start to finish with about 970 m of elevation gain, typically taking 6–8 hours for most hikers who stay moving at a reasonable pace.
The ridge tops around Mjølvafjellet (1,222 masl). From the higher sections you follow the crest while looking down toward the Romsdalen valley, with views that can include Troll Wall (Trollveggen) and the fjords when weather clears.
Terrain character is boulder and rocky in the ridge line portions, including airy narrowing where exposure is part of the challenge. In fog or low cloud, staying oriented matters because the edges can be hard to judge from the trail.
In high season conditions, July through September is the usual planning window, but the ridge can still be affected by snow and changing weather depending on the year.
The hike is typically done as a one-way point-to-point route starting from Venjesdalsetra and finishing in Åndalsnes. A dedicated start-time bus service connects to the trailhead during the summer season, reducing the need to drive and park for a one-way hike.
The descent into Åndalsnes uses the Romsdalstrappa stone steps and passes the Rampestreken viewpoint (steel viewing platform). If you want to shorten the toughest descent, you can also use the Romsdalen Gondola option to get down to the Åndalsnes area.
Expect big day logistics: this is a strenuous ridge traverse, not a short loop, so plan for the full time commitment and bring gear for rapid weather changes, especially when clouds sit low over the ridge.
