Roys Peak Track

Roys Peak Track is a demanding out-and-back day hike near Wānaka, New Zealand. The route climbs to Roys Peak via steep, long switchbacks and is typically done as a 5–7 hour round trip.

Expect sustained uphill effort: roughly 1,277 m of ascent on a ~16.4 km total distance, with the steepest sections coming early and staying present for most of the climb. Plan for a steady pace and significant downhill fatigue on the return.

The track is highly exposed, with little to no shade. Wind can be an issue on the upper slopes and snow is possible near the top even in summer—dress for rapid weather swings rather than just the conditions at the trailhead.

Access is from a trailhead off Mount Aspiring Road, about a 5-minute drive from Wānaka town centre. A $5 cash track fee is required at the trailhead.

The hike is known for a fast route to classic viewpoints over Lake Wānaka; the “icon” viewpoint is reached partway up, and from there you continue to the summit before heading back down the same steep zigzags.

There’s an annual closure tied to lambing season: closed each year from October 1 to November 10.

Parking fills quickly, so starting early is common. Bring a head torch if you’re hiking before first light, since early sections are dark and the route is steep.
