Sentier Blanc-Martel

Sentier Blanc-Martel is a one-way, long-distance hike in the Gorges du Verdon, designed to take you down to the bottom of the canyon and back up to the finish. It’s 16 km and typically takes about 6–7 hours in one go.

The standard start is Chalet de la Maline in La Palud-sur-Verdon, and the route finishes at Point Sublime in Rougon. This direction is also tied to the seasonal shuttle logistics, so most parties plan their timing around it.

Expect a sustained canyon walk with mixed character: steep cliffside paths plus sections that feel enclosed by undergrowth as you work your way along the river corridor. The route includes prominent named features such as the Imbert breach and the Guègues scree slopes.

Near the middle and late stages, the trail involves steep stair sections and narrow passages, then continues through the Samson Corridor including the Baou tunnel (670 m long) and other tunnel crossings that require prepared lighting.

Several of the signature stops/landmarks include la Mescla (near the river confluence area), the Brèche Imbert staircase, and tunnel-and-corridor sections such as the Samson Corridor plus the Baou and other named tunnel passages along the descent/ascent line.

Logistics matter for this route: there are shuttles in season that transport hikers between La Palud-sur-Verdon (morning drop-off at Chalet de la Maline) and Point Sublime (afternoon return). The route is managed with restrictions including a ban on dogs and ATVs, and swimming in the Verdon is prohibited throughout the canyon.

Plan equipment around the tunnel sections: bring sturdy hiking boots, at least 2 liters of water per person, and a lamp for the tunnels. The route also calls for warm layers, sun protection, and a packed lunch since there are no support stops along the way.
