Sentier des Crêtes
Sentier des Crêtes is a long ridgeline hike inside Parc national du Mont-Orford (SEPAQ), flagged as “SE” and designated for foot traffic only. It’s a mountaineering-scale route in the park’s hiking network, with access tied to SEPAQ fees because you start/finish at the ski-station area rather than a free roadside trailhead.
As a route, expect exposed ridgeline hiking with uneven, rocky footing and sustained climbs. The standard line of the trail is built around ridge travel that reaches major viewpoints/peaks such as Pic de l’Ours and continues toward Pic du Lynx, with a mix of open ridge sections and forest stretches.
Route length is commonly offered in two ways: the one-way option is about 11.4 km (5–6 hours), while the commonly used loop option is about 18.7 km (around 9 hours). Plan for an all-day effort rather than a half-day outing.
Seasonally, the trail typically opens in late May, so summer plans start after the seasonal opening. The route is also described as best started early to make efficient use of daylight on the ridges.
For preparation, bring sturdy, high-traction hiking boots and navigation support; the terrain is described as technical and the ridgeline positioning makes wayfinding important. Bring plenty of water for a full-length crossing, since the longer loop runs for most of the day.
Wildlife sightings mentioned for this route include white-tailed deer at lower elevations and peregrine falcons near the cliff faces—another reason to stay alert and keep a steady pace rather than lingering on exposed edges.
