Skyline Trail (251)

Skyline Trail (251) is the Pecos Wilderness’s long spine hike in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, running in a big horseshoe around the Pecos River valley. It follows the ridgecrest for about 69–70 miles, connecting major high country areas near Barillas Peak to the Santa Fe Ski Basin end near Deception Peak (useful as a reference when planning section hikes).

Expect sustained high-elevation trekking with roughly 13,000+ feet of gain and terrain that can be slow going. Travel includes old burn areas on the southern/eastern portion, where downfall and rugged ground can make navigation harder than the route name suggests—plan on moving carefully rather than fast over long days.

The route is documented as a long-distance hiking itinerary, but the common way to do it is in sections or as part of a multi-day loop rather than a single continuous push. That’s especially practical given the length and the portions that can be rough to move through.

A well-used access pattern is to reach the middle of the route via Winsor Trail (#254) from the Santa Fe Ski Basin—about 4.2 miles along Winsor to pick up Skyline Trail (251). Once you’re on Skyline, many hikers steer toward either the Baldy/Lake Katherine side or, alternatively, the northeast ridge direction toward Pecos Baldy Lake as their chosen thru-hike line.

For management context, the route sits in the Santa Fe National Forest and is within Pecos Wilderness terrain; wilderness travel rules apply where the route enters/continues through that designation (including restrictions such as no mountain bikes in wilderness). Dogs and horses are allowed as designated uses on the trail, with foot travel designated.

The Skyline Trail (251) is a point-to-point route with a history of volunteer maintenance work on targeted sections, including clearing downfall and improving tread in places. That means conditions can vary a lot by where you are on the route and how recent crews or natural events have affected the trail surface.
