St Peter's Dome Trail #118

St Peter's Dome Trail #118 is a hiking-only route in Santa Fe National Forest’s Jemez Ranger District area, built as a point-to-point out-and-back between Forest Road 142 and Forest Road 289. It’s about 6.1 miles total and is rated medium difficulty, with the climb starting around 6,600 ft and finishing near 8,200 ft.

The route is on standard/ground trail tread and is limited to hiking use. Dogs must be leashed at all times while you’re on the trail.

Route management centers on wilderness protections in the Dome Wilderness; long pants/long sleeves and sturdy footwear are appropriate for brushy tread and a remote setting, and you should plan to be self-sufficient once you leave the trailhead area.

Access is via Forest Road 289 off NM State Highway 4, using the Dome Wilderness parking area. Vehicle access to the forest roads is sometimes easiest with higher-clearance vehicles, since the approach is not fully paved.

The hike is remote enough that shade can be scarce away from the forested sections; plan accordingly if you’re targeting warm months or you expect prolonged sun exposure.

Do the trip as an out-and-back: you’ll turn around near the high end at Forest Road 289 rather than continuing as a one-way loop.
