Sulphur Skyline Trail
Sulphur Skyline Trail is a day-hike out-and-back in Jasper National Park that runs from the Miette Hot Springs area to the Sulphur Skyline summit area. Expect a steady climb with a long push above treeline, ending at a high point where hikers typically take in wide-ranging views across the surrounding mountain terrain.
The route is short for its effort: the commonly reported round-trip length is about 8–9 km. Elevation gain is roughly 653 m, which lines up with the sustained ascent and the steep sections near the top.
Early on, the trail starts on a paved section before transitioning to gravel and dirt. As you gain elevation it narrows and continues through forest, with repeated uphill switchbacks appearing on the steeper segments.
Around mid-route, there’s a crest/junction area described as the Shuey Pass area, with continued climbing along Sulphur Skyline toward the summit. From there, the trail steepens again through the trees before reaching more open terrain higher up.
Near the summit, the climb becomes a rocky, exposed final push. The upper part includes a scramble-like section on rough ground, and the route can feel windy once you’re out of the trees.
Seasonality matters here: the usual hiking window is summer into early fall (June through October). Roads accessing Miette Road are typically closed from mid-October to early May, which limits when the route is feasible.
Plan for basic summit turnaround logistics: many parties budget about 3.5–5 hours including breaks. The descent is largely the return on the same route, but the rougher steep ground near the end means careful footing matters.
