Surprise Creek Trail

Surprise Creek Trail (TR 1060) is an Alpine Lakes Wilderness route accessed from the Surprise Creek Trailhead near the Bonneville powerline right-of-way. The trail starts under power lines, transitions into a spruce/fir canopy, and then climbs into higher terrain as you work up the valley.

Expect a rapid elevation gain through forested sections. The trail is very steep and wet in several places, and you’ll pass areas with waterfall activity and clear pools along the way.

After a bit over 2.5 miles, the route begins switchbacking as it steepens up the side of the valley for about a mile, climbing close to 1,000 feet in elevation. Past that, the route continues on to Surprise Lake, where there are several established campsites.

The Surprise Creek Trail continues to a junction with Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail 2000 near Glacier Lake at about 4,800 feet. Both Surprise Lake and the lower shoreline area around Surprise Lake are described as places to linger (rocky shoreline near the lake).

This is a hiker-only trail segment within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Wilderness rules apply (including camp in established campsites), the max group size is 12, and dogs must be on a leash.

Water is not available on the trail, so plan to carry enough for the whole outing. An Alpine Lakes Wilderness self-issue permit is required for day and overnight use and is obtained at the trailheads from May 15 to October 31.
