Swamp Creek Trail
Swamp Creek Trail (#912/924) is a long-distance hiking route in Montana’s Kootenai National Forest that runs through the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness along Swamp Creek drainage. Expect a rugged backcountry tread designed for hikers who can handle wilderness routefinding and minor route complexity.
The route is Trail Class 3: the tread and corridor are present, but conditions can be rough enough that you may deal with challenging terrain and need solid navigation even when the trail is visible.
This trip is typically described as strenuous and long: roughly 12.5–13 miles one-way if you’re going toward Buck Lake, and about 9 miles one-way if you continue farther toward Wanless Lake. Plan on multiple hours of hiking time; most attempts are a 6+ hour outing depending on pace, pack weight, and how you handle creek crossings.
One of the defining features is water on the move. The trail crosses Swamp Creek around the 8-mile mark, and that major crossing is described as challenging and dangerous for much of the year, with additional smaller stream crossings that are usually less problematic.
For gear and trip planning, the route is hiking-only in this wilderness area (no motorized or mechanized use). Plan on packing out waste and following food storage rules for attractants, since the route runs through wilderness backcountry rather than a managed day-use trail network.
Access uses Swamp Creek Road from Highway 200 near mile marker 20: drive east onto Swamp Creek Road for about 2.5 miles, then continue another ~2 miles after a sharp left (north) as the road bends south to reach the trailhead staging area for #912.
