Hiking route

Third Vault Falls Trail is a Fundy National Park day hike near Alma, New Brunswick, built around a descent to the park’s largest waterfall—Third Vault Falls (about 16 m / 52 ft). Expect a route that generally trends downhill to the falls and then retraces the same ground back out. The total hike distance is about 7.4 km round trip, with a typical time of 3 to 4 hours.

The approach starts slowly: the first ~3.7 km meanders downhill through mixed hardwood and softwood stands, keeping the walking mostly gentle. Trail character here is light compared with what’s coming later—good for settling into pace before the steeper work starts.

The hard part begins in the lower half. The trail becomes progressively steeper and includes navigation over exposed roots and rock, plus wooden stair sections as you work down toward Upper Vault Brook and into the rocky ravine.

Near the finish, you’re effectively entering the stream corridor to reach the base area. The last several hundred meters can involve wet rock travel—wading may be required or you may hop across slippery stones depending on water depth.

Footing management matters on this one: waterproof footwear with traction and support is the standard recommendation, and trekking poles are especially helpful for balance on the steep, wet descents.

Access is off Laverty Road in Fundy National Park. Park entry fees apply, and in winter or early spring the Laverty Road gate may be closed, which can add walking distance each way. Give yourself extra time at the falls—there’s an amphitheatre-like rocky setting at the base that’s a common destination stop.
