Timp-Torne Trail
The Timp-Torne Trail is a blue-blazed hiking route that runs across Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks, traveling along Dunderberg Mountain and around Popolopen Torne (“the Torne”) through Popolopen Gorge.
It’s an endurance-style outing even when you don’t hike the entire length; the trail is over 11 miles and is commonly used as a long day hike spanning from Bear Mountain areas toward Harriman connections.
Expect sustained uphill work on the north ridge route through the Torne area, with scrambling-class movement on that line when conditions require extra care.
A key theme of the route is the unfinished Dunderberg Spiral Railway/DSR landscape: the trail threads past cut/graded rail-bed features and tunnels associated with the planned but never completed gravity railroad.
The southern approach commonly used by day hikers starts from Mine Road/near Popolopen Torne, following the Mine Road spur up to the trailhead at the base of the Torne.
For route planning, a typical way to connect the area for day use is to combine Timp-Torne with nearby blue/red-blazed Harriman/Bear Mountain trail connections to make a loop that runs past The Timp and back toward Bear Mountain’s Route 9W corridor.
