Tortilla Trail #254

Tortilla Trail #254 is a rugged, remote backcountry connector hike in the Galiuro Mountains Wilderness of Coronado National Forest, Arizona. It links East Divide Trail #287 with Sycamore Trail #278 near Mud Spring, giving you a way to chain Galiuro Wilderness segments into longer days or overnights.

Plan on about 7.5 miles one-way and roughly 1,500–2,400 feet of elevation change overall (varies with where you start and finish the connecting links).

Trail character is wilderness-path hiking with sections that can be hard to read—study ahead and expect navigational effort. Where the tread is bare, you’ll see exposed bedrock, and route direction is commonly marked by large cairns; overgrowth is more noticeable in parts of the upper Sycamore area.

Tread conditions aren’t just “rocky”—the route often alternates between open, stone-heavy walking and brushy, overgrown stretches. In the bare-rock zones, cairns are a key part of how you’ll keep your bearings.

Water is variable in both timing and location. Seasonal flow can appear in parts of the drainage network, while other portions may be dry, so treat the route as a carry-first hike unless you’ve verified nearby sources for the dates you’re going.

Prep like this is navigation work: carry a topographic map and compass, and re-check your plan before committing to the longer connector line. Because conditions can change, scout and inspect committed features and check current conditions when weather brings wet ground—routefinding and footing can shift quickly in the wilderness.

If you’re stitching together a longer itinerary, the common pattern is to build from East Divide Trail #287 to Mud Spring and then connect to Tortilla Trail #254 to reach destinations such as Powers Garden via the broader wilderness network.
