Ultimate Chutes

One of the best lines in the notch, but also one of the most serious. While most of the terrain accessible from the gondola features small avalanche terrain features with poor connectivity, Ultimate Chute is steep, sustained and capable of sliding throughout. It is also situated above a 100 foot ice cliff. Vermont’s only avalanche fatality took place here, when a skier was swept over this cliff in a wet slide. With that being said, when conditions are favorable for this objective, it’s worthwhile. Traverse out from Hellbrook just above the Football Fields. There is no great way to get there. Bushwhack, traverse, go high or low above thick sections, check your phone 11 times to make sure you’re on target, but most importantly try not to loose too much elevation, reach the far left end of the football fields and traverse around the corner. Stay high and enter the chute just a little ways beneath the ice flow at the top. Drop in and enjoy steep and deep turns, in a well defined chute. Keep your eye out for the ice cliff below. Hang a hard left and traverse through steep woods, to gain access to the exit. From here you can traverse right into the gully beneath the ice flow, or continue to traverse left into a much bigger slide path. Either way, ski beautiful turns out to the notch road
