Hiking route

The Venediger Höhenweg (Venediger High Trail) is a multi-day hut-to-hut hike in Austria’s Hohe Tauern National Park. It wraps around the Großvenediger in the Venediger Group and is usually hiked as a 5- to 7-day traverse through terrain that stays mostly above 2,000 m.

Distance is about 49.95–60 km depending on the variant, with roughly 7,900 m of elevation gain on the full trail concept. Expect a steady rhythm of big days broken into daily stages, with hut stops at the end of each day.

A common itinerary starts on the Südabschnitt from Hinterbichl (Parkplatz Ströden) and runs to Matreier Tauernhaus. The route is often recommended south-to-north (finishing at Matreier Tauernhaus) to ease into the terrain early and save the most glacier-focused days for later.

High points and passes you’ll run into on the classical staging include Türmljoch (reported around 2,772–2,844 m) and later high crossing terrain that continues on toward the Badener Hütte and beyond via the Galtenscharte area (with crossings linked to Galtenscharte/Galtenkogel).

Lodging is the main logistics lever: you’re typically aiming for one hut per day, not daypacks-with-picnic-falls between trailheads. Many huts on this route are open in the main summer season (mid/late July through September is commonly targeted), so late-season planning matters.

On-trail character is alpine and demanding rather than casual walking: tight, steep sections with exposed ground and occasional needs for scrambling/cables show up on some stages. It’s a route where sure-footedness and confidence on steep paths make a real difference, especially on higher legs around glacier terrain.
