Virginia Capital Trail

The Virginia Capital Trail is a long-distance, paved multi-use corridor between Richmond and Jamestown Settlement, running roughly along the Route 5 corridor. Expect an easy-to-follow walking option on mostly paved surfaces with occasional road crossings.

Use the Richmond endpoint at Dock St at S 17th St under I-95, then head southeast out of the city toward Jamestown Settlement (2102 Jamestown Rd). Most users plan a one-way day trip or a multi-day itinerary using the many trail access points and towns along the line.

The trail is segmented through a sequence of named districts, with section mileages listed as: Greensprings (2 mi), Chickahominy Riverfront (5 mi), Sherwood Forest (13.2 mi), Charles City Courthouse (7.6 mi), New Market Heights (10.4 mi), Varina (12.2 mi), and Richmond (1.3 mi).

There are public restrooms at multiple points along the route, including at Jamestown Settlement (during business hours), Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Charles City Courthouse, Four Mile Creek Trailhead, Dorey Park, and several other access stops; portable toilets are also available at places such as Herring Creek and Great Shiplock Park.

Trail access is straightforward with parking options called out at Jamestown Settlement, Jamestown High School, Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Charles City Courthouse, Cul’s Courthouse Grille, Indian Fields Tavern, Four Mile Creek Trailhead, Dorey Park, and Great Shiplock Park; overnight parking is addressed for select locations.

For trip planning on foot, the route has no dedicated trail shuttle; itinerary planning is handled through suggested trip lengths published by the trail organization, and on-trail supplies are available at stores and cafés at various access points.
