W.A. White Trail
W.A. White Trail is a long-distance, moderate hiking route used to reach Lower Wolfjaw in the Adirondack High Peaks area. It follows a path surface (ground) with round blazes and is mapped as designated foot travel, not for horses or bicycles.
The route is a demanding climb with sustained elevation gain and a section of steeper, more technical scrambling near the top end of the ascent—plan for exposed boulder/rock features rather than a simple footpath.
Route length is commonly taken around 1.6 miles for the trail itself (with significant additional time once you connect to peak objectives as part of a loop). Expect a time window on the order of a few hours for the trail portion, not a casual walk.
Access runs through privately managed AMR lands at the Ausable Club trailhead area, with a parking reservation requirement during the May 1–October 31 window for anyone starting from that AMR access point.
Wet conditions are the key variable on W.A. White: the granite knob and associated rocks can get slick and muddy, especially near exposed boulders. Wear footwear with strong traction, keep your footing deliberate on the rockier bits, and avoid widening the path—stick to durable lines and leave no trace.
A common way to use the trail is to approach from the AMR parking area, connect to W.A. White for the climb to Lower Wolfjaw, then build a longer Wolfjaw objective by linking to other Wolfjaw trails for a loop (time and distance increase accordingly).
