Wynoochee Lake Shore Trail #878
Wynoochee Lake Shore Trail #878 is a 16-mile loop hike in the southern Olympic National Forest, starting from Trailhead within Coho Campground. The route follows the lake for 6 miles, continues upriver for another 2 miles to a bridge over the Wynoochee River, then returns to Coho Campground along the opposite side of the river/lake in 8 miles.
Expect a rolling up-and-down profile rather than sustained climbing: elevation gain is described as moderate with a low point around 800 ft and a high near 1,000 ft. Terrain stays mostly at mid elevations through forested sections above the shoreline.
The trail brings you past small streams and waterfalls, with Wynoochee River crossings and lake time built into the loop. It’s also described as passing through both old-growth and second-growth forest.
Access and permitting are tied to the recreation area setup at the lake; parking for the trailhead commonly uses the Northwest Forest Pass. Motorized vehicles and stock are prohibited on the route.
Seasonal window matters: the loop is generally best from late spring into early fall, and it can get snowed in during winter months. Roads and access patterns near the north end of the lake can change seasonally.
Plan for a backcountry-style walk-through rather than a groomed path. Reports around the route have noted blowdowns and overgrown sections in some periods, so expect to scramble or navigate around downed trees and vegetation.
Because the loop is water-adjacent and stream/waterfall features are part of the route, treat slick log bridges and damp ground as hazards after rain or during wet weather—build extra time and be ready to use alternative footing for crossings.
