‘Āinapō Cabin at Halewai
‘Āinapō Cabin at Halewai is a wilderness backcountry cabin operated by Hawai‘i DLNR, intended for overnight use inside the Kapāpala Forest Reserve area. The cabin sleeps up to 6 people and is set up with drinking water, plus composting toilets and a catchment cistern for washing.
Overnight stays require a cabin reservation and permit fees apply. Because ‘Āinapō Road/trail access involves locked access gates and private ranch land, you need an Access Account and a gate access code from Kapāpala Ranch; the gate code is scheduled to be delivered by text on your entry day. The main approach to the cabin also requires planning around vehicle capability—4WD with good clearance is necessary for the initial portion of the access road. It sits at roughly 7,750 ft, so temperatures can run cold; pack sleeping bags, warm layers, and bring your own food and pre-potable water.
