Allisons Hut Number 1
Allisons Hut Number 1 is a historic bush cabin on the Central Highlands side of Tasmania, also known as “The Branches Hut” or “No. 1 Hut.” The hut has a rough stone fireplace and chimney, and it was originally used by shepherds from the turn of the century until 1955, when the Allisons gave up their lease on “The Branches” after flooding made access difficult.
Today it’s used as a stopover and emergency shelter for people travelling through the area, including hikers and fishermen. The stone chimney needed repair after falling into disrepair in the early 2000s; it was restored and rebuilt in 2016, with the work completed over four days and rebuilt as close as possible to the original specifications.
Getting there is typically done by vehicle from the Lake Augusta side: drive west from Liawenee toward Thousand Lakes Lodge (Bernacci’s), then head south and north again across the end of Lake Augusta (only if passable). The hut is just northeast of Split Rock, a little north of the lake.
