Arcadia Trail #328

Arcadia Trail #328 is a long-distance hiking route in Arizona’s Coronado National Forest near Safford, running in the Pinaleño Mountains. It’s an out-and-back hike covering about 10.2 miles round trip and is built for hikers who want a sustained climb into higher-elevation forest.

Route profile is dominated by elevation gain of about 3,133 ft, so expect steady, continuous uphill effort rather than short bursts. The trail climbs through pine-oak woodlands and then transitions upward into spruce and fir forest as you gain altitude.

Timing matters on this route: the higher elevations make summer and early fall a better window for cooler hiking than lower-desert alternatives. The trail’s purpose in the area is often framed as relief from heat while you move into the cooler mountain belt.

A common way to start is from Upper Arcadia, with the trail running up to Shannon Campground. The ascent is straightforward in concept—go up to Shannon, then retrace your way for the out-and-back return.

About a mile from Shannon Campground, you can branch to the Heliograph Peak Trail #328A. That spur leads to the top of Heliograph Peak and connects you with the historic fire lookout and cabin experience there.

Facilities are tied to the two campground areas: Upper Arcadia and Shannon Campground have fire rings, picnic tables, and pit toilets, but potable running water is not typically available. Plan accordingly for a full day on a high-gain, long-distance route.

On the broader network around this area, Heliograph #328A also offers an alternate way to make a shorter loop: Arcadia plus Heliograph to the summit, then return via the Heliograph Road (not for public motor vehicles) and a short stretch along the Swift Trail back to Shannon Campground.
