Arthur O. Wheeler Hut
Route Details
Arthur O. Wheeler Hut (A.O. Wheeler Hut) is an Alpine Club of Canada log cabin hut in the Rogers Pass area of Glacier National Park. It’s maintained as an alpine hut base for backcountry hiking, mountaineering, scrambling, and ski touring in the surrounding ranges, with winter access and use tied to Rogers Pass snow and day-trip objectives.
The hut has wood heat (wood provided) and propane power (propane lights, propane stove, and propane oven), plus a creek water source and an outhouse. It has a max capacity of 30 in summer and 24 in winter, with bedding provided as mattresses. Food/gear heat comes from the provided wood and propane systems; plan to carry and manage personal food and supplies accordingly.
Summer access is via a short walk from the Trans-Canada Highway area: drive to the Illecillewaet Campground/parking area side, then walk the approach. Winter access uses a snow route from the Illecillewaet Valley/Illecillewaet Campground trailheads and may require a Winter Permit for planned winter backcountry access in Glacier National Park.
Pricing depends on member status and season: member rates are $50 standard and $60 peak season (June 15–October 15); non-member rates are $60 standard and $72 peak season (June 15–October 15). Winter pricing is $50 standard and $60 peak season for members (December 1–April 30) and $60 standard and $70 peak season for non-members (December 1–April 30). An overnight parking permit is required (free of charge) when accessing from the Illecillewaet Valley or Illecillewaet Campground trailheads.
