Aspen Trail 411
Aspen Trail 411 is a loop hike in the Carr Lake Trail System near Payson, Arizona, with the trail forming “loop A” (the red loop). It starts and finishes at Carr Lake Trailhead and is typically described at about 5.5 miles round-trip.
The route heads through high-country conifer woodlands and into open stretches that function like wildflower meadows, so expect a mix of shaded tread and more exposed ground as you loop around the system.
Route junctions matter on this trail system: early on, Aspen Trail 411 briefly merges with General Crook Trail #140, and at about 1.3 miles you reach the junction for Boulder Hop Trail #413.
A notable landmark on the loop is an enclosed wildlife fence built to protect young aspen from local elk, which you pass as you continue through the aspens’ area.
Although the loop is relatively short, it can be easy to lose bearings within the broader Carr Lake Trail System. Carry a map/route on your phone or GPS, and be prepared for navigation challenges rather than relying on simple sign-following.
For planning, the trail is characterized as a “blue” difficulty option and is often recommended as a short, specific route within the larger Carr Lake network—use the loop concept to turn around early if you’re off pace or unsure of the next junction.
