Route Details

Asulkan Cabin is an Alpine Club of Canada backcountry hut in Glacier National Park, used for overnight stays tied to skiing, hiking, scrambling, and mountaineering objectives in the Asulkan Valley. The hut is a panabode-style cabin that sleeps 10, with a propane cooking stove (no oven). Heat and lighting run on propane, and the hut is stocked with cooking/eating utensils and sleeping pads; water comes from a glacial stream and the washroom is an outhouse.

Approach is via the Asulkan Valley Trail: from Illecillewaet Campground you follow the marked “Asulkan Valley Trail,” initially along Asulkan Creek, then it steepens as you climb to the crest of the moraine; from the end of the trail it’s another 300 m up to the hut. Peak-season and summer use highlights include that significant snow coverage at higher elevations can persist well into July, so plan for variable winter-to-summer mountain conditions. For winter access, the approach follows about the same route in summer and winter, and overnight access from the Illecillewaet Valley or Illecillewaet Campground trailheads requires a free overnight parking permit; winter backcountry access in Glacier National Park also requires a Winter Permit.
