Avalanche Crest
Rogers Pass classic freeride lap off a broad alpine ridge into the Illecillewaet side. Big alpine bowl up high with options along the crescent ridge; mellower, sparsely treed lines on the SE end; steeper, more exposed gullies toward the NW. West–southwest aspects get rapid solar effect—quality swings fast once the sun is on it.
Approach from the Illecillewaet trailhead: skin the Avalanche Crest summer trail switchbacks to treeline benches, then trend into the south bowl to gain the ridge before picking your drop. Descend fall-line features back to the highway corridor near the start point.
Hazards: frequent wind slab and cornice development on the crest; convex rolls with unsupported starts; gully terrain traps; overhead hazard from artillery-controlled paths along the corridor. West-facing solar can produce crusts and loose wet; manage timing carefully and space out in busier choke points.
Access/regs: Rogers Pass Winter Permit System applies and daily area openings vary—check the Backcountry Access map before you go. Parking at Illecillewaet has winter restrictions and no overnighting in vehicles. ATES rating lists Avalanche Crest to treeline as “Challenging (Class 2).” See Parks Canada for permits, openings, and safety info: official page.
