Hiking route

Awausee Trail is a demanding loop hike in Lake Superior Provincial Park near Agawa Bay, Ontario (Algoma Country). The route is about 10 km total and is built around a long climb to multiple lookouts above the Agawa River Valley and Agawa Mountain.

Expect roughly 200 m of elevation gain (highest point about 200 m / 650 ft above the valley). The payoff is a sequence of panoramic views from the lookout area, with Lake Superior also in view from the higher points.

The hike is graded difficult because of steep, uneven hiking terrain and rocky outcrops, plus a river crossing on the route. The river crossing can be the limiting factor depending on recent conditions.

Loop direction matters: park signage recommends going counter-clockwise so you can turn back if the river crossing isn’t passable without having to retrace the entire hike.

A shorter option is to aim for the first lookout and return—about a 45-minute out-and-back—to get a feel for the main steep section and the first big viewpoint without completing the whole loop.

Trailhead planning: access is by vehicle, and you need a daily vehicle permit to enter Lake Superior Provincial Park.
