Axolotl Cabin

Axolotl Cabin is a backcountry alpine hut in Montana’s Gravelly Range, operated by the US Bureau of Land Management. It’s about 14 miles southwest of Ennis at roughly 7,000 feet, adjacent to the Axolotl Lakes Wilderness Study Area, and it serves as a base for fishing, hiking, horseback riding, boating/paddling, and wildlife viewing around the Axolotl Lakes area and nearby small lakes.

The cabin sleeps a maximum of seven people with a full bed, a full-size fold-out futon, and two single bunk beds; no bedding is provided. Power for the lights and refrigerator comes from solar and can be subject to outages; cooking uses propane (stove/oven), with a BBQ, wood stove, fireplace, and an outdoor fire pit available. Non-potable water is available for you to treat, and there’s an outhouse on site. A small corral near the cabin can accommodate two horses; renters are required to bring their own certified weed seed-free feed and no grazing is allowed.

Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov, with booking secured by a credit card. Use is limited to the cabin’s operating season in late May through early October (season dates vary by year on the booking system). Access is remote and road conditions can be problematic: the approach roads may become impassable when wet, and a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended. Bears may be present in the area, and food/toiletries should be stored in the cabin or a locked vehicle; the cabin is not cleaned between reservations, so bring your own cleaning/disinfection supplies if you want to do that yourself.
