Barnard Hut
Barnard Hut is a backcountry hut in the Alfred A. Braun Hut System, run by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. The hut sleeps 8 people (a one-level structure with loft) and sits at 11,480 feet in the Elk Mountains area between Aspen and Crested Butte. Use is winter-focused, with access commonly from the top of Aspen Mountain via the Richmond Ridge Road; the usual ski-out is about 7.2 miles. The hut has a wood/heat stove with wood provided as part of the winter kit, an outhouse toilet, mattresses and pillows, and a wood oven/gear setup for melting snow (bring your own filter).
On-site setup includes solar powered lighting; there’s no refrigeration, no sauna, no fire ring, no grill, and no charging. Reservations are required for stays, and the nightly rate listed is $320. The nearby hut network is in serious avalanche terrain: routes to and between Braun/Friends’ huts aren’t marked or maintained, so navigation skills and careful planning are essential.
