Route Details

Ben Ferris (Great Cairn) Hut is an Alpine Club of Canada backcountry hut: a very small and remote stone cabin in the northern Selkirks of BC, built in 1965 and used mainly as a mountaineering base. The hut has capacity for 6 people and is open all year; access in summer and winter is via helicopter arranged through Alpine Helicopters in Golden.

Rates are $40 for members and $50 for non-members (pricing may change). Booking is required, and the hut is set up with a wood heat source but with no wood provided; light sources and the stove are propane, and the outhouse is a portable-toilet-bag type bathroom (bags required). Common objectives include Mt. Sir Sandford and other snow-and-ice peaks in the area, plus ski touring and ski mountaineering in winter.
