Bertha Lake Trail
Bertha Lake Trail is a Waterton Lakes National Park day hike in Alberta that goes out-and-back to Bertha Lake. The route runs about 1.38 km (measured distance in this dataset is 1.38 km) and is curated as a day hike; the wider published route length for the standard hike is about 11.4–12 km round trip.
Plan for roughly 600 m of elevation gain and 4.5–5 hours on the trail. It’s split into three main sections: Lower Bertha Falls, Upper Bertha Falls, and then the approach to Bertha Lake.
The start climbs gradually along Bertha Creek from the Waterton townsite, bringing you to Lower Bertha Falls as an early turnaround option. After crossing a wooden bridge past Upper Bertha Falls, the route ascends more steeply.
From the switchback climb you’ll reach Bertha Lake, a turquoise/alpine setting framed by Bertha Peak, Mount Alderson, and Mount Richards. The trail levels as you approach the lake, making this a natural spot to pause before your return.
The standard approach is best used in the warm season, with access typically targeted for April through October.
Wildlife activity is common in the area, and bear spray is strongly recommended. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash.
