Birkhead Mountain Trail

Birkhead Mountain Trail is a moderate hiking route in the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness of Uwharrie National Forest (central North Carolina). The route runs through the heart of the wilderness on designated hiking trails, with the trail corridor blazed white.

Length is about 5.9 miles one way (commonly discussed as ~11.3 miles round trip for the full end-to-end hike and back). In practice it functions as a long-distance day outing or a segment inside the larger trail system in the wilderness.

For planning access, common trailhead patterns tie to the wilderness boundaries: the north end is reached from Tot Hill Farm Road (Tot Hill Farm Access), while the western boundary access is tied to Thornburg Trailhead area locations on Lassiter Mill Road / Thornburg Farm access.

Heading along the route, expect ridge hiking through the Birkhead Mountains Wilderness. Multiple wilderness-trail connections exist in the area (including Robbins Branch Trail and Hannah’s Creek Trail), so the Birkhead Mountain Trail is often combined into longer loops.

In the wilderness context, group size is limited to 10 people, and the area emphasizes Leave No Trace principles. Federal regulations protect cultural and historic artifacts; if you encounter remnants, keep them undisturbed.

Trail conditions here are backcountry by default: potable water is not available at the site-level, and restrooms are not listed as available. Horse/pack animals are not allowed on trails in the wilderness.
