Black Birch Bivoauc

Black Birch Bivouac is a basic two-bunk backcountry hut in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay) run by the Department of Conservation. It’s positioned on the Black Birch Range between the Lotkow Roadend and Little’s Clearing, about 1.5 hours from Little’s Clearing (or roughly 1–1.5 hours from Lotkow Road).

Sleeping is in two bunks, and use is free with no bookings required—first come, first served. The hut has a long-drop style toilet; there’s no drinking water, no toilet facilities beyond the long-drop, and no fireplace provided. The bivouac was built in 1963 by the New Zealand Forest Service, and it’s reached by tramping from nearby carparks and road access points within Kaweka Forest Park.
