Black Mountain Cabin

Black Mountain Cabin is a very rustic backcountry cabin on the west side of Black Mountain within White Mountain National Forest. The cabin was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and renovated in 1992, and it’s reached via the Black Mountain Ski Trail (used for hiking or skiing depending on season). It sits at about 2,450 ft, starts from about 1,250 ft along the trail, and the approach via the Black Mountain Ski Trail is 1.4 miles via a moderate grade.

Inside there are 8 wooden bunks, 2 small tables, benches, and a wood stove; a broom is provided and you’re expected to tidy before leaving. There’s an outhouse with a vault toilet a short distance away, but there’s no water and no electricity at the cabin, no bedding or sleeping pads provided, and drinking water isn’t available on-site—plan to carry and/or treat what you’ll use. The cabin is not insulated, so winter guests should be ready for interior temperatures close to outdoor conditions even when the wood stove is in use.

Access is reservable and requires booking; bring everything you need (including toilet paper, cooking utensils and a camp stove, trash bags, matches, first aid kit, flashlight or lantern, extra batteries, and firewood/cutting tool for dead and down wood since the amount of firewood can’t be guaranteed). Recreation.gov also notes you should clean high-touch surfaces between visits, close and lock doors and windows when leaving, and carry out all trash and excess food; firewood brought from outside the area isn’t permitted to limit invasive pests. From the cabin and trail network, it’s used for hiking and cross-country skiing, and cross-country ski access is also supported by a groomed East Pasture Loop XC Ski Trail within the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation trail system (trail pass required).
