Boesmankloof Hiking Trail

Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail is a long, one-way mountain walk through the Riviersonderend Mountains linking Greyton and McGregor via Die Galg. Typical wayfinding is straightforward on the official route once you’re on track, with the route built as a there-and-back option for most hikers.

Plan around roughly 14–17 km per direction and 4.5–7.5 hours one-way, with the overall effort feeling “moderate” in grading only if you’re comfortable handling sustained climbs and uneven footing. The trail surface is ground and the route is treated as mountain hiking (SAC mountain hiking scale).

Start from Greyton if you want the more commonly described steep climb early: the route works up from the village side to Breakfast Rock and then continues through the valley. Start from McGregor if you’d rather spend the opening stage on more initial downhill before turning into longer valley travel and climbs later in the day.

The mid-route highlight is Oakes Falls: a system of waterfalls and rock pools that create clear swimming and resting spots. Along the same valley section, you’ll also find pools fed by watercourses, making it a practical lunch stop if you time it for a break.

A key navigation point on the Greyton side is reaching the official entrance to the Cape Nature Riviersonderend Nature Reserve and Mountain Catchment Area; after that you’ll spend much of your time descending and traversing in the valley. There’s also a fork near the route’s later ridge section where taking the wrong one adds extra distance and leads into the cottage area.

For a common overnight plan, many hikers run it as a two-day out-and-back: hike up and over, overnight at Die Galg accommodations, then return the next day. A published recommendation is a 30–32 km round trip over two days when you use this overnight strategy.

Access is regulated: a valid permit is required and daily limits apply, so book in advance. The route also comes with conservation-style rules that include no dogs, no fires, and no overnight camping on the trail.
