Boulder Lake Trail

Boulder Lake Trail is a long, out-and-back hike in the Morning Star Natural Resources Conservation Area, using the Sultan Basin trail system managed by Washington DNR. The route runs through forested ground and reaches Boulder Lake (a high-alpine basin lake with backcountry camping options).

Route length is about 13.6–13.8 miles roundtrip, with roughly 2,140 feet of elevation gain. Expect a steady grind rather than a short climb-and-descend day.

A big part of the experience is terrain complexity: the trail can be very difficult or rough in places, with steep sections that are not always clearly defined. Along the way it follows drainages (Tenas Creek is referenced on the Boulder Lake Trail corridor) and crosses wet ground; some years/conditions can involve saturated bog areas and creek crossings.

Access is tied to Sultan Basin and the Spada Lake watershed area. Hikers are required to stop at the kiosk at Olney Pass to sign in and obtain a free watershed entry permit before proceeding.

The Boulder Lake area includes backcountry campsites and fishing opportunities. Camping is only allowed in the season window stated by the watershed rules (reported as June 15 to Oct 15), so plan dates if you’re aiming for an overnight.

Trail infrastructure and maintenance matter on this route: bridges and crossings have been rebuilt/updated on the main line over time, including work replacing failing creek-bridge sections in the years leading up to 2025–2026.

Dogs are allowed on leash on the Boulder Lake Trail route.
