Brian Waddington Hut
Route Details
Brian Waddington Hut (commonly referred to as Phelix Hut) is a VOC backcountry cabin in Phelix Creek on the shores of Long Lake. It’s a wilderness hut-style overnight stop built for non-motorized users, with access via the Phelix Creek Trail and the Phelix Creek FSR (motor vehicle use is restricted seasonally, and the hut’s “air access” permission is limited to hut work trips). The hut sleeps 24 people comfortably in the loft, with additional capacity on the main floor for a maximum total of 40 (31 max in the loft).
Use is non-reservable (no reservations); the hut is not locked. A $15 per person per night fee applies to help cover hut maintenance (pay online or use the hut drop box, with mail as a backup). Facilities include a conventional wood stove with limited wood supply (and no campfires are allowed at VOC huts), solar lighting, an outhouse, greywater on the northeast side of the hut, and creek water nearby that must be boiled or filtered/purified. The hut is in a bear-active area: access to the hut and surrounding area is discouraged from August 15 to October 15, and the Phelix Creek FSR is closed to motor vehicles from April 1 to June 15 (park at the winter lot).
