Cabane de l'Hérétang
Cabane de l’Hérétang is a free, unmanaged backcountry cabin in the Chartreuse massif used by hikers as a self-reliant overnight stop. It offers about 8 sleeping places (including a mezzanine with mattresses), with a wood stove for heat and cooking and a nearby water source area, but no electricity.
Access is via the marked path from the parking at Trois Fontaines (Pommiers-la-Placette), climbing toward Pas de Miséricorde. After a rocky ledge, continue and look for a small cairn that leads off to a steep, quick descent to the cabin; if you miss this, there’s a later alternative marked by a cairn on a cut tree and a yellow marker on a low rock. When you reach the Combe des Veaux intersection (sign), you’ve gone too far.
For day-to-day use, expect limited comfort and plan to be fully self-sufficient: there are no latrines, and people commonly bring/plan for their own sleeping setup. A wood storage area is present, but stove performance reports are mixed—some visitors note heavy smoke/fumes or leakage—so be prepared to manage ventilation and fire behavior on arrival.
