Cabinet Divide South Trail
Cabinet Divide South Trail (#360S) is a long-distance hiking route in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness near Libby, Montana. Plan on a one-way hike of about 5.5 miles with a moderately strenuous feel as you push up toward the divide.
Expect high-country terrain where the hike spends time on ridges and in exposed sections near the top. The route’s point-to-point layout is designed as a dedicated line between higher spots rather than a flat woodland stroll.
On the upper portions, reaching the divide is the main payoff: you get broad sightlines into the Silver Butte drainage and Swamp Creek drainage, plus views across surrounding Rocky Mountain peaks.
Seasonality matters here. Mid-summer through fall is the practical window, since deep, persistent snow can linger outside that range at higher elevations.
Trail use includes hiking and stock use, but stock is not recommended on the northernmost 1.5 miles of the route; keep that in mind when you’re choosing where to overlap with any loop alternatives.
This trail also connects into bigger itineraries in the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness—commonly as a piece of routes that aim for nearby glacial lakes and longer loops that tie in with divide-trail travel.
