Caminito del Rey
Caminito del Rey is a linear, one-way hike in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge near Ardales (Málaga) to Álora. The route length is about 3 km on the official walkway, with the total walking time typically listed as 3–4 hours.
The footway is a narrow, cliff-hugging path built through the canyon; key segments combine tunnels and gorge-side sections, transitioning into boardwalks before the route exits toward El Chorro (with the main access corridor continuing downhill).
Access is managed with timed entry and ticketing. Helmets are mandatory for entering the route, and the entrance area uses staff checkpoints where footwear/accessories are checked before you’re organized into groups by timeslot.
For most visitors, the logistical pattern is to start at the northern access near Ardales, hike down through the gorge, and finish at the El Chorro side. A shuttle bus is commonly used to get between the two ends after your walk.
The route is strongly oriented toward exposure: it’s not suitable for people with severe vertigo or a fear of heights, and dogs are prohibited. The platform height above the gorge and the suspension elements make it unsuitable for those who aren’t comfortable with steep, airy terrain.
Given the exposure, plan for weather-related control of the experience and seasonal conditions. The official materials highlight the area’s protected-natural setting and include visit rules; children under 8 can’t access the Caminito del Rey.
