Camino Argar del Sureste de Almeria

Camino Argar del Sureste de Almería is a long-distance hiking route that forms part of a modern pilgrimage network linking the Cathedral of Almería with the Church of Santiago in Lorca, running across roughly 214 km in 9 stages. The walking line is built to follow old coastal guard paths before pushing inland in several stages.

The route spends much of its time threading through semi-arid country around the Cabo de Gata–Níjar Natural Park, moving between coastal sections and interior climbs. Typical day-to-day walking is moderate, but you’ll encounter sustained heat and exposed stretches, so pace yourself for low water availability.

Even though it’s signed as a pilgrimage route, the ground can still be a mix of coastal paths and inland trackwork. Expect situations where the path can be less obvious on the ground; navigation discipline matters when you’re far from settlements.

A notable operational feature is that it’s not just one straight “main line”: there are standard stages and also named alternative routes (“vías alternativas”) that add distance beyond the principal route length.

Lodging and rest planning tends to be stage-based. The route is presented with an accommodation infrastructure across the corridor between Almería and Lorca, including albergue-style options at multiple points along the way.

For preparation, don’t treat the route as a “wet-weather walk.” If rain or heavy moisture has been in the area, conditions on rocky ground and any exposed sections can become unpleasant—scout the day’s sections you’ll rely on and check current conditions before committing.
