Camino de Chasna

Camino de Chasna is a long-distance hiking route on Tenerife that follows an old highland thoroughfare linking north and south of the island. On the modern loop most hikers do, you start at Plaza Obispo Pérez Cáceres in Vilaflor and finish back at the same plaza.

This route is routed as PR-TF 72 “Vilaflor - Lunar Landscape - Vilaflor Loop Trail”. The loop is built around the approach along Camino del Atajo (an older section of the Camino Real de Chasna), then continues uphill on Camino de Chasna through pine forest terrain toward the Los Escurriales viewpoint.

Expect a mountain hike profile with substantial climbing and a high point just under 2,000 m. The route info for this loop gives a total distance around 13.09 km with roughly 852 m of ascent and 852 m of descent, typically done in about 5 hours.

Around the pine forest section you pass Casa Galindo on the edge of Barranco de Las Mesas, cross the ravine, and continue uphill on Camino de Chasna. The descent brings you to the Los Escurriales viewpoint, positioned to look over the “Lunar Landscape” area.

The route then returns toward Vilaflor via a connector path that runs alongside Casa de Los Llanitos, bringing you back to the same path used earlier.

Route signage is PR-coded with yellow-and-white marks. The PR-TF 72 loop is managed within protected natural area context tied to La Corona Forestal (Corona Forestal).

There are on-route rules tied to the protected landscape and trail network: stay on the marked track and don’t enter private property, hunting grounds, water galleries/wells, or caves; pay attention where bicycle, horse, or vehicle traffic may intersect the route; and take care on uneven ground and steep slopes. Separately for the lunar formations, the guidance is not to walk on the Lunar Landscape itself.

The broader Camino Real de Chasna is also described as part of major long-distance trail frameworks (including GR-131/E7 and the Anaga–Chasna “Camino Natural” network), and it is historically associated with transhumance routes and later European exploration tied to Teide.
