Canyon Creek Bivouac
Canyon Creek Bivouac is a Department of Conservation backcountry bivvy in the Rangitata/Rakaia Rivers area of Canterbury. It’s a basic two-bunk hut that’s run on a first come, first served basis with no bookings required, and use is free.
The hut has sleeping provisions (mattress) and an outhouse toilet with pit-latrine disposal. There’s no drinking water provided, and no fireplace; bring your own water supply and plan to cook and shelter accordingly. The hut has no DOC track access, so you’ll need to navigate for yourself. If you’re crossing unbridged rivers or side streams, only do so when you can find safe entry/exit points and the water isn’t flooded; otherwise turn back or wait for conditions to improve.
