Cape Brett Hut
Cape Brett Hut is a Department of Conservation serviced hut in the Cape Brett and Whangamumu area of Northland, using the Lighthouse Keeper’s house at Cape Brett. It’s a base for trips around Cape Brett and access through the nearby track network into the reserve, with a booking requirement and a no-camping, no-dogs rule to protect native wildlife.
The hut sleeps 23 guests and provides gas cooking and drinking water at the hut. Facilities include toilets with pit-latrine disposal, and there’s no fireplace provided. To get to the hut on foot, use the Cape Brett Track (16 km, about 8 hours) from the walkway route, or boat into Deep Water Cove and walk about 2.5 hours (4.4 km) to the hut; alternatively, you can come ashore at Cape Brett landing below the hut and walk up. The hut is locked, and you receive instructions for the access code in your booking confirmation. A walking permit is required for the Cape Brett Track, and the track has a fee for the section between Rawhiti and Deep Water Cove (paid to maintain the private-land crossing), with no charge for the section between Deep Water Cove and Cape Brett on public land.
