Carros de Foc

Carros de Foc is a hut-to-hut hiking loop in Spain’s Catalan Pyrenees, set inside Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. The route is commonly tackled as a multi-day circuit—about 70 km total—linking a chain of mountain refuges rather than doing a single out-and-back hike.

Plan for an alpine, rocky, high-altitude character. The trail is described as technically demanding at points, with uneven terrain and high passes; elevations are reported nearing 3,000 m on the standard circuit.

The loop is typically completed over 5–7 days, and the “start anywhere” layout is a big part of how people schedule it. That flexibility comes from the fact that the circuit connects nine mountain huts, so you can choose a direction and build your itinerary around the refuges you want.

A practical way to approach the route is to use Espot as a common entry point into the park and then walk to the first refuge on the loop. From there, stages generally alternate between climbs to passes/cols and descents through valleys toward the next hut.

Wayfinding is a recurring theme on this route: it has sections that overlap with GR11 markings, plus other sections marked with painted wooden posts and cairns/stone piles. If visibility drops or conditions make cairns hard to read, you’ll need to navigate with the route information you carry rather than relying on continuous, obvious signage.

Lodging is limited to the mountain refuges (camping is not permitted in the national park). Overnighting is done at the refuges along the circuit, and the standard logistics revolve around pre-booking beds and using refuge meals and facilities rather than planning for camping/resupply in between.

Seasonality matters because snow can persist in higher sections. The route is most often hiked in the summer season when refuges are open, but late/early-season conditions can still bring snow patches into higher cols and boulder terrain.
