Cavendish Dunelands Trail

Cavendish Dunelands Trail is a short day hike in Prince Edward Island National Park, built for a straightforward out-and-back walk through dune country. The route is about 0.94 km total on your Outmap track and is typically done in under an hour depending on pace and time at the pond crossings.

The trail route runs from the Cavendish Beach parking area side over to the Oceanview Lookout parking area side, staying fairly flat for most of the way. Expect an easy tread with minor terrain changes as it threads between open sand-dune areas and park fields.

Surface is mostly packed gravel, with a wooden floating boardwalk crossing Macneill’s Pond (also called the Lake of Shining Waters). That boardwalk section is a key feature of the walk and the part where you’ll spend the most time on constructed footing.

Route highlights are the sand dunes that frame Cavendish Beach, the pond crossing at Macneill’s Pond, and the nearby red sandstone coastline visible from the broader area around Oceanview. The trail alignment is designed to connect these zones without leaving the designated paths.

One-way direction on the ground is typically treated as “go out, return the same way” for the short hike distance. Many hikers start at Cavendish Beach and turn back at/near the Oceanview end to keep the trip compact.

In-season timing is generally best from June through September, when the park trail system in this area sees regular use. Bring footwear suited to gravel and boardwalk surfaces, especially if you encounter wet conditions on the pond crossing.
