Challenge Cabin
Challenge Cabin is a Flathead National Forest backcountry winter shelter in northwestern Montana, reached by an 8-mile trek by hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. It’s a remote, winter-focused stop for people traveling by snow sports rather than car access.
The cabin sleeps up to five and includes a propane cook stove, lights, and a wood stove; a vault toilet is provided outside. Guests are expected to bring bedding and basic supplies (including water for drinking/cooking/cleaning, food, flashlights, and garbage bags); basic cooking pots and utensils are supplied, and firewood is included for heating. Pets are allowed, with required clean-up.
Plan around the cabin’s stay limits: a maximum of three consecutive nights with a total of seven days per calendar year. Check-in is 2 pm and check-out is 12 pm. The cabin remains locked and a combination lock code is provided with the reservation confirmation.
Wildlife is present in the area, and you should store all food and garbage in appropriate containers inside the cabin. Water, electricity, and sewer are not provided, and commercial use of the cabin is prohibited; firewood handling is constrained to prevent spreading pests.
