Chatter Creek Trail
Chatter Creek Trail (#1580) is a steep, 5.5-mile one-way climb in Alpine Lakes Wilderness, reaching the end of the route at Icicle Ridge Trail (#1570). Expect a sustained workout: the trail starts with an easy warm-up, then transitions into brushy, rocky terrain and steep switchbacks near the top.
The first mile rolls along dirt and includes a footbridge over Chatter Creek at about the 1-mile mark. After that, the grade steepens quickly and stays aggressive as you work through forested slopes before opening into higher country.
Between roughly 1.5 and 3 miles, the climb gets notably steeper with tight, brushy switchbacks through dense forest. Higher up, the trail develops into rockier ground and boulder fields as it angles toward the high ridge.
From about miles 4 to 5.5, the terrain becomes more rugged—rock and boulder fields dominate the ascent toward the ridge. The route ends at the junction with Icicle Ridge Trail (#1570), where you can continue toward Lake Edna or turn back.
This is hiking-only terrain and is not recommended for horse travel. Dogs are allowed on leash.
The trailhead is accessed from Leavenworth by turning onto Icicle Road (Forest Road 7600) and following it about 15 miles to the Chatter Creek Trailhead, located just before the Chatter Creek Guard Station and Campground. A Northwest Forest Pass / America the Beautiful Pass is required for parking, and the Alpine Lakes Wilderness permit is required and handled as free self-issue at the trailhead. Restrooms and potable water aren’t available at the trailhead.
