Hiking route

Chesler Park Loop is a strenuous Needles District day hike in Canyonlands National Park built around the Chesler Park Trail plus the Joint Trail, then returning via a section of Elephant Canyon Trail. Expect route-finding challenges through drainages and repeated up-and-down travel, with long stretches on sandstone and slickrock.

The loop is 10.7 mi (17.2 km) round-trip and typically takes about 5–7 hours. Elevation change is about 615 ft (187 m) overall on the route, though the cumulative effort is greater due to frequent step-like climbs and descents.

From Elephant Hill Trailhead, the Chesler Park Trail climbs and gradually works into Chesler Park. A common planning approach is to mentally break the early portion into thirds: getting up toward Elephant Hill, traveling through Elephant Canyon, then finishing the push into Chesler Park via the final climb called “The Escalator.”

In Chesler Park, the terrain opens into a relatively flat, grassy pasture surrounded by sandstone formations. There are junctions inside the park where the loop can go left or right; staying on the Chesler Park Loop toward the Joint Trail is often the objective that makes the full loop worth it.

The Joint Trail portion is the signature: it threads through deep, narrow fractures in the rock with sections that can feel tight. Conditions that create risk on slot-like terrain matter most here—flash floods and rockfall hazards are the headline concerns.

Start this hike early and plan to be self-reliant. Bring water, snacks, sturdy footwear, and a headlamp; this is a remote route where sun and temperature swings can be significant, and the walk can involve rough, uneven footing and stone steps.

Wet-weather sensitivity is real. Do not enter the Joint Trail when conditions raise flash-flood or rockfall risk; summer monsoonal storms are a specific trigger to avoid.

Permits aren’t required for day-hiking the loop, but you do need a Canyonlands entrance pass/fee. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.

This route is commonly hiked counter-clockwise to save the easiest return for later in the day.
