Cochise Trail
Cochise Trail (Trail #279) is a long, out-and-back hike in Arizona’s Dragoon Mountains that runs through Cochise Stronghold, with the route meant to connect the East and West Stronghold canyons via Cochise Stronghold Divide.
The typical turnaround is Stronghold Divide for a shorter out-and-back, but the route can be continued to the other side of the Divide for a longer full hike.
From the east approach, the route is reached from the East Trailhead near Cochise Stronghold Campground; the west approach starts from the West Trailhead at Stronghold Canyon (accessing the west end usually requires a high-clearance vehicle).
The climb leads up toward the Stronghold Divide (around 5,900 feet). The trail continues across varied terrain as you work your way between the canyons and up toward the Divide. Key reference points on most attempts include Halfmoon Tank on the way up.
Completion time is commonly in the 5 to 5.5 hour range for the standard out-and-back version.
Parking at the East Trailhead involves a day-use fee, and dogs and horses are permitted in the area.
